Rules & Applications
Rusty Jones Awards
Each year at the NSDTRC (USA) Annual Awards Banquet, the club recognizes our most versatile dogs by presenting them with the Rusty Jones Award. The award is named after CH Sylvan’s Rusty Jones CDX WC, one of our earliest versatile Tollers.
To be eligible, a dog must have earned an NSDTRC (USA) Championship, an NSDTRC (USA) or AKC Companion Dog title and an NSDTRC (USA) Working Certificate.
Owners of dogs that completed/fulfilled the requirements for this award from July 1 through June 30 of any given year can contact Kim Simons for more information. Please note that titles may be earned over several years.
SYLVAN KENNEL AWARD
Each year Lennoxlove Kennel gives the Sylvan Kennel Award to the Toller who has earned the highest average score of the first three qualifying scores towards an American Kennel Club obedience title. The Award will go to the dog who earned the highest average score between July 1 and June 30 of any given year. The recipient of the Award must be a member in good standing of the NSDTRC (USA).
Lennoxlove Kennel offers this Award as an encouragement to the membership of the NSDTRC (USA) to train their Tollers, enjoy working with them and to publicize to others the attributes of our breed.
Dogs in contention for the Award will be identified by our club Statistician and provided to Records, who will identify the winning dog. This information will be given to Marile Waterstraat of Lennoxlove Kennel, who will present the Award to the winning dog and handler at our Annual Awards Banquet each year.
TENDERFOOT OBEDIENCE AWARD
Each year, Region 2 will give an Award to the highest scoring dog/handler team at the Annual Meeting and National Specialty show in the Novice A obedience class.
This award was originally conceived by Evelyn Williams as a way to encourage Toller owners to become involved with obedience competition with their dogs. Evelyn became involved in Tollers in 1989, and during her lifetime trained her Tollers to the highest level in obedience and in the field. Evelyn was a wonderful obedience trainer and handler, and was always in contention for HIT awards. Obedience was one of her favorite dog sports because of the teamwork involved, and because of the foundation it provides any future work in the field.
After the completion of the Novice A class, a representative from Region II will review each Toller’s score entered in the class to determine the winner. The Tenderfoot Award will then be given out by a representative of Region II at the Annual Awards Banquet or at another get together after the obedience trial.
Versatility Program
Don’t forget applications for the NSDTRC (USA) Versatility program continue to be accepted on a year round basis. If you and your dog have succeeded in titling in three or four different venues, you may be eligible for a versatility certificate.
All applications received by August 25 for titles earned through June 30 of any given year will be listed in the program at the yearly Annual Meeting.

Evelyn Williams Award of Excellence
Annually, the club offers the Evelyn Williams Award of Excellence as a means of recognizing members of the NSDTRC (USA) that own and handle their Tollers to the highest levels of titling and achievement. Titles and/or achievements in conformation, obedience, field tests, field trials, tracking, and agility are venues in which the owner/ handler may qualify for this award. Examples of titles include the UD, WCX, MHR, TDX, and the various agility titles awarded at the highest levels. Examples of achievements that may qualify the owner/handler for the award are Best in Specialty, Best in Show at an all-breed event, or High in Trial (score of 195 or greater). There are contingent rules surrounding most of the achievements, so read the rules carefully.
The period of eligibility for the award is July 1 through June 30 of each year. The owner/handler must be a member in good standing with full voting privileges during the entire eligibility period. In addition, the owner or co-owner must have handled the dog to the title or achievement. No retroactive awards will be presented for prior year periods. Applications must be received by August 25th each year. The awards will be presented during the yearly Annual Awards Banquet.
Admiral Halsey HOT Dog Teamwork Award
Each year the Admiral Halsey HOT Dog Teamwork Award will be given to each team of Toller and Owners(s) who have completed all their training and hunt tests or field trials together and achieved any level of an AKC field title: Junior Hunter, Senior Hunter, Master Hunter, Field Champion or Amateur Field Champion. Owner(s) refers to all co-owners of the dog. The co-owners can share the training and handling of the dog. Owner-trained and handled is defined as any Toller owner(s) who participates in all facets of the field training with the dog. The owner(s) may work, take lessons, and practice with amateur or professional trainers; however the work must be done by the owner(s). As such whenever a dog is left with an amateur or professional trainer for the purpose of field training while the owner(s) is not present, the team will not qualify for this special team award. A toller trained by a person other than the owner(s) for any period of time will never qualify for this award. Additionally, the owner(s) must handle the dog for all legs/stakes required for the title.
The Club’s title year is July 1 through June 30, and dogs and owners that complete the requirements during this time frame will receive the Award at the next Annual Awards Banquet. Applications must be received by August 25th each year. All legs/points for each title do not have to be earned during the Club year; the Award will be given following the year the title is completed. Regardless of the number of owners who participate in the training and titling of the dog, only one award will be awarded.
Rising Star Award
Each year Sydney Jones-Juckett and Stuart Juckett will award the Rising Star Award to the owner of the brood bitch that produced the most AKC champions in the previous calendar year. The award would be based on AKC and Pedigree statistics, over the course of a calendar year of January through December, which would be calculated by the NSDTRC (USA) statistician.
The award for the previous year will be given out at each year’s National Specialty Annual Awards Banquet by either the Juckett’s if they are in attendance, or the NSDTRC (USA) National Trophy Chair. Individuals eligible for this award must be voting members in good standing, as defined in the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club (USA) Constitution and Bylaws. The eligible recipient must be the owner or co-owner of the dog. The period of eligibility for titles earned by offspring of each bitch will be the calendar year of January through December.
Struan Award
This is a perpetual trophy to be awarded to the NSDTRC (USA) member-handler of the oldest dog of either sex to earn a Working Certificate Intermediate at the NSDTRC (USA) National Specialty Hunt* Test. To qualify, a dog must be six (6) years old or older on the day of the test and not have earned a title in any field testing program at a level that involves a double marked retrieve. The qualifications are such that the award may not be made every year.
For each Specialty Hunt Test, entrants will be notified and/or reminded of the availability of this trophy through information provided in the Test Premium. Owners with eligible dogs will be asked to fill out a form documenting the age of their dog and the fact that they do not have another hunt test organization title that requires double retrieves, and submit it with their entry. The form will be available either from the National Trophy Chair or on the NSDTRC (USA) website. If, at the Hunt* Test, an owner with an eligible dog becomes aware of the trophy but has not filled out or submitted a form, they must complete the form before the test is begun and submit it to the National Trophy Chair or Test Chairperson.
